Throwback Thursday - Math Learning Center Apps

Free Math Tools Apps from The Math Learning Center

The Math Learning Center has 9 free apps for elementary students to use to create models and develop their understanding of number sense, geometry and money.  I first blogged about Number Pieces in April 2013 and Number Frames in February 2015.

They just recently released a new app called Money Pieces.  This app combines coin values with base ten blocks to "help students visualize and understand money values and relationships."  Read more about all the features in Money Pieces on their website: http://catalog.mathlearningcenter.org/apps/money-pieces

While you're in the App Store, don't forget about the other great math tool app for elementary students... Schoolkit Math!  More on my blog here: http://engagingtechtools.blogspot.com/2014/02/schoolkit-math-great-tools-for.html

Number Frames App

Number Frames

Number Frames is a free app from the same company that makes Geoboard, Number Pieces Basic, Number Line and Number Rack.  It's perfect for creating 10 frame models for math problems.

Students can use premade 5, 10, 20 and 100 frames (or custom sizes!) to model number sentences.  There is a wide variety of counters to choose from and students can use the drawing tools to annotate.

Online Manipulatives for Grades K-8

McGraw Hill Education Virtual Manipulatives
McGraw Hill offers a free website with a huge variety of manipulatives that would be great for use in a classroom with an interactive projector.

After picking your grade level, choose the desired background from the list.  Pre-K-2nd grade have game board and story board options as well as the workmats that are available for all grade levels.

Next choose a manipulative.  Some options include algebra tiles, base ten blocks, currency, clocks, fraction tiles, geoboards, geometric solids, hundred chart, tangrams, thermometers and many more.

Use the tools at the bottom of the screen to move, type text, draw or measure objects on the workmat.

Thinking Blocks Math Apps

Thinking Blocks

Many of you have probably used the Thinking Blocks online interactives from Math Playground but did you know they are now free apps too?  They are an awesome resource for helping students understand how to solve word problems by using online manipulatives in a step by step manner to create concrete models of their solutions.

Both versions (online and apps) offer word problems in 4 categories:  addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, fractions, and ratio/proportion.

Each app is set up the same way:

1.  Students are presented with a word problem.

2.  First they use the blocks to label the known and unknown parts the problem.

3.  Then they fill in the known and unknown numbers.

4.  Finally, they solve the problem.

Check out this great resource today online at http://www.mathplayground.com/thinkingblocks.html (computers only) or download all the Math Playground apps at https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/math-playground/id498617244.
